How one Good deed, lead to Candle Making!

Updated: Sep 16, 2020

After reading a number of Blogs before starting this, I was worried with how many blogs declare their love of all things candle associated. Before commencing with my candle making business, I can honestly say I’d never bought a candle or shown any interest in candles. I’ve been bought candles as presents, but no matter the candle I always struggled to smell anything when the candle was burning and after a while I stopped trying, resigned to the fact I couldn’t smell a burning candle to save my life.

In contrast my beautiful friend Maurisha loves all things candles and no matter the store she will have to smell and purchase a candle. Her candle knowledge with regards to the best scents, new types of candles, wick types, 3 wick candles and burn times was impressive, whereas I didn’t have a clue. If I am honest, I never understood the joy of candles as I never benefited from the hot throw of a candle, but I knew it made my friend happy and that’s what mattered.

This is why after a few months of a lot of sadness and stress I decided to pop to Heals in Euston London and buy a small candle for my friend, and whilst I knew it wouldn’t change anything or make things better, my aim was to make her smile even if it was for just a second. The Candle was a small tin of Bergamot and Juniper, that had an amazing cold throw, the perfect gift for my friend. As we sat and chatted about the candle, I had the audacity to suggest I could do better and how fun it would be to create Caribbean inspired candles.

With a bee in my bonnet I went home, bought wax, essential oils, fragrances and a candle making kit, determined to make a Caribbean inspired candle I could actually smell.

My First Fragrance

The first scent I created was Jamaican Porridge, a combination of Vanilla, Nutmeg, Cinnamon and Oatmeal, to reminded me of a Jamaican breakfast on a cold winter morning before school. Whilst admittedly I couldn’t smell this one either, the cold throw was amazing and the fun and joy I got from creating my own fragrance was exhilarating, I couldn’t wait to create more. With this new found passion I set about cooking up as many fragrances and candles as possible, using my poor work colleagues as tester. With this, colleagues began asking to purchase some of my scents and the creation of the Grey Collection Ltd began.

That was May 2019 and since then I have researched candle wax, wicks, essential oils, fragrances, essential oils and wax additives to make the best candles possible. As I’d finally found something, I was passionate about, that I loved to make and without fail always managed to make someone smile.
